Are Times Tables Worksheets Helpful?

If you want your children to learn times tables you can go to the internet, search for ‘times tables worksheets’, and before you know it they are on your computer ready to be downloaded.

You can feel proud of yourself that you have done something to help your children with their learning.

One question arises though and that is; are times tables worksheets a good way for your children to learn?

Although it always feels better that you have done something proactive to help your child learn their times tables.

You may think; yes I am making a difference, my children are learning the times tables and improving their math accordingly.

Yes and no! Have you considered that filling in these times tables worksheets could be boring and instead of kindling and interest actually reducing your children’s love of maths.

Writing out times tables is renowned for being a slow process. Worksheets could hinder the process of learning as they are so time consuming.

As a result, they learn slowly but more importantly they are not learning to think quickly and get the tables correct instantly.

A child needs a strategy to know the answer instantly. Can you imagine if you asked your child’s name and it took as long to receive the answer as your child could write their name.

You would not be happy. Great for handwriting practice but not for giving you the answer, it’s the same with times tables worksheets.

Speaking out loud is obviously a quicker process than writing. If your child was able to think quickly this in turn would prove more fun for them.

Yes, I think so. There is a saying “Speak to learn”, and it’s precisely through speaking that your children can learn the times tables easily and quickly.

So to return to times tables worksheets. Times tables worksheets are helpful. However, it is the way that they are being used which is unhelpful.

Most children will think of writing as work and times tables worksheets are in fact called WORK-sheets. Work, work, work! Yuk, say your children. Do children think of speaking as work?

Time tables worksheets can be used by parents for learning and testing instead of sitting and writing.
